PHILADELPHIA – It’s official: Jay-Z will be headlining and curating acts for a two-day concert coming to the City of Brotherly Love over Labor Day Weekend.

Nearly 30 artists “that embody the American spirit” will be performing across three stages on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park on Saturday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2.

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Budweiser and the United Way joined Mayor Michael Nutter at the announcement Monday morning on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The event is being billed as “an exciting, two-day music festival in Philadelphia this Labor Day weekend to benefit United Way and produced by Live Nation.”

“The eclectic roster of talent cultivated by JAY Z will be announced on May 21 and include acts ranging from rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance,” a news release states.

“We could not be more excited, and I’m pleased to announce that we will have a two-day festival here in Philadelphia the 1st and 2nd of September right out on the parkway featuring Jay-Z,” Nutter told the crowd, drawing applause from those who showed up despite a light drizzle. “We’re also excited that our United Way of Southeastern Pa. will be a participant and a recipient of great support from this event.”

Tickets for the “Budweiser Made in America” music festival go on sale on May 23 through Ticketmaster.com and Livenation.com . A limited number of two-day tickets will be available for $99 (plus service charges).

Budweiser Facebook fans will have access to pre-sale tickets beginning Tuesday, May 22. To become a Budweiser Facebook fan, visit http://www.facebook.com/Budweiser .

Officials said the concert will benefit the United Ways in Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, Lancaster County, Pa., and New York City, “enabling them to invest more dollars into their regions, strengthening local communities and improving lives.” They expect the money will will positively impact the education, income and health of the most vulnerable and most needy citizens in these regions.

The two-day concert festival will also be available to watch around the country via live-streaming. Details will be announced at a later date, officials said.

Jay-Z, who took the microphone last, thanked Budweiser, the United Way, Nutter and the city. The 14-time Grammy award winner said whenever he enters into a project, he aims for something great. Another one of his points of focus is, “Is it going to push the culture forward?”

“I think this concert will do that,” Jay-Z said. “I think Budweiser did that in the past with the ‘Superfest,’ when it gave a platform for artists to perform – mainly hip-hop and R&B artists, you know, when the opportunities wasn’t as plentiful as they are today.”

His third touch-point was whether the event does some philanthropic work, and he credited the United Way with doing some great things with his Carnegie Hall concert.

“Everybody knows my love affair with Philly from the amazing, talented artists I’ve signed from here … to the film work that I’m about to do with Will Smith and James Lassiter at Overbrook (Entertainment),” Jay-Z said.

The founder of Rocawear and also co-owner of the New Jersey Nets said his final consideration is always whether a project will make his mother proud.

“I can’t do half-baked work,” Jay-Z said. “So, I’m really putting my all into this. I’d like to announce that we’ve already got like 70 percent of the artists confirmed. So, we’re working. It’s gonna be a great day in Philly. I look forward to seeing you guys. … Thank you guys for coming out. I appreciate you.”

Hov is heading to Philly for a special announcement, however, that’s about all we know thus far.

We’ll have to wait and see, but Roc Nation reports that on May 14th at 10:30 am Jay-Z is going atop Philadelphia’s Art Museum steps to make a ‘major announcement’ alongside Philadelphia’s Mayor, Michael Nutter.

R.I.P. WHITNEY HOUSTON (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012)

VIA The DJ Benz Blog

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time.[3] Her list of awards includes two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.[4][5]Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church’s junior gospel choir at age 11.[6] After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

Houston was the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (“Saving All My Love for You”, “How Will I Know”, “Greatest Love of All”, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”, “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”). She was the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Top Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly “Top Pop Album”) on the Billboard magazine year-end charts. Houston’s 1985 debut albumWhitney Houston, became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone‘s best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[Her second studio album Whitney (1987), became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Houston’s crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for “How Will I Know”, influenced several African-American female artists to follow in her footsteps.

Houston’s first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The film’s original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single “I Will Always Love You”, became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period.[7] The album makes her the only female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the filmsWaiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996). The Preacher’s Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history. Three years after the release of her fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998), she renewed her recording contract with Arista Records.[11] She released her fifth studio album Just Whitney in 2002, and the Christmas-themed One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. In 2009, Houston released her seventh studio album I Look to You.

On February 11, 2012, Houston died of unknown causes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Cory Gunz Arrested On Gun Possession

VIA Hot New Hip-Hop

On Sunday (January 29) MTV News spoke with veteran Bronx rapper Peter Gunz, who confirmed that his son Cory Gunz was in custody, after being arrested with a loaded firearm. The 24-year-old rapper was handcuffed around 2p.m. on Saturday in his hometown, Bronx, New York where he is now being held. “It was definitely an illegal search,” Peter revealed.

Gunz was unable to disclose full details on the incident just yet, but he explained the events leading up to his son’s arrest. “I spoke to the arresting officer, and so far, what I’m hearing from him is that they got a phone call at the station saying they should ‘look out,’ ” Gunz said. “According to [the officer], they didn’t know he was Cory Gunz. They just saw a bunch of kids following him around.

“What I will say is that the officer that arrested Cory, actually happened to be a cool dude,” Gunz continued. “After arresting Cory, sitting down with him and talking, he felt bad about the situation.”

Gunz junior was brought to the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx on Saturday, but officials there say he has since been transported to Central Booking, on E. 161st Street in the Bronx.

While this is Cory Gunz’s first brush with the law, his father is still worried about the potential fallout from a firearm charge. “At the end of the day, there’s a reason for everything, but at the same time, in New York, it’s mandatory jail time,” he said. “To go to a precinct and see your son, your junior, in handcuffs, it’s heartbreaking. Anytime you see your child in jail, in the cell, in handcuffs, it’s very hard. He’s walked down some of the same paths that I walked down, but you never want to see your kids go through what you went through.

“This is Cory’s first offense, but sometimes they like to make an example out of rappers and people with any kind of celebrity to them.”

In April 2011, Cory Gunz and his father starred in the six-part MTV docu-series “Son of a Gun,” which charted the young rapper’s rise to fame. The younger Gunz is signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label.
