Cole Hamels/Philadelphia Phillies Agree To $15M Deal – Avoids Arbitration

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies and Cole Hamels avoided salary arbitration Tuesday when they agreed to a one-year, $15 million contract, according to a source.

Philadelphia also reached an agreement with infielder Wilson Valdez, who was eligible for salary arbitration.

Hunter Pence remains the only Phils player still eligible for salary arbitration, although an agreement can be reached up until the moment the team and player are supposed to meet with arbiters.

The Philadelphia Phillies took advantage by a crucial mistake on the part of the Cardinals Jaime Garcia when pinch hitter Ben Francisco hit a 3-run homer in the 7th inning. Cole Hamels pitched a very good game but was high in the pitch count. Closer, Ryan Madson, came in the 8th to hold off the Cards and help save the game in a 3-2victory for the Phills.The Phillies now lead the series 2-1.

The Philadelphia Phillies had the opportunity to reach the World Series with a win in game 5 versus the Dodgers. Cole Hamels started for the Phillies and only lasted 5 innings as he gave up 3 runs. It was a home-run night as there were 4 homers hit within the first two innings. The Phillies were able to rely on their successful offense this year, including the postseason, for this game. They were determined to win at home and the Phillies did with a 10-4 victory over the Dodgers and winning the National League Championship Title for the 2nd straight year. Now they await the winner of the Yankees/Angles. Ryan Howard was named MVP.
